5 Items NOT to Skimp On When Building Your Home.

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

So you’re thinking about building a house? We know there are certain places you have to choose an economy option or budget-friendly something, but here are 5 items you should NOT skimp on in your home.

1. Windows + Doors.

Not only do upgraded windows and doors look more appealing, they are also more energy efficient and will help you save on utility costs. In some cases, you can save up to $500 a year just by having energy-efficient windows! You’re also guaranteeing your home will be weather tight, offer noise reduction, be condensation free and improve comfort in your home.

2. Labor.

While choosing quality labor seems important at first, it’s often times pushed to the side at the first sign someone else offers to do the job cheaper. However, sticking with a quality, licensed, experienced and insured contractor will make sure the job gets done correctly and won’t need to be redone in the future.

3. Insulation.

Splurging on insulation is well worth it in the long run. You’ll recoup upfront costs quickly, as they help you save on heating and cooling costs year-round. This is also something that won’t be easy to change once you’re in the house -- best to do it right the first time!

4. Materials.

Using cheap materials to build the foundation of your home will quickly lead to needing to fix or upgrade these items. This is why we recommend only using quality materials and if you’re using a quality trade, they will be sure to provide good materials for your home.

5. Roofing.

While there are many options when choosing your roof, springing for quality will result in longevity. Not only do you want to choose a good roofing system, but making sure it’s properly ventilated and has correct insulation will be key.

We hope you’ll find these tips useful as you make your house plans. If you’re looking for a builder, we would love to meet with you and discuss building your dream home. Please give us a call or send us a message if you’re interested!
